I feel like they’re a part of me, but I’ve never been a part of them. I love dirt roads and farms and small towns. We made the drive out there at least once a year and running around the comparatively small town of Plattsmouth made me feel like a country girl.Īs an adult, I lived in Lincoln, NE for a couple of years and spent my free time driving around the dirt roads and exploring abandoned farmsteads in Nebraska and Kansas and South Dakota, only rarely all the way up into North Dakota. I loved those drives through what others consider flyover country. Although I grew up in an urban environment, my family spent many hours driving back and forth between Chicago and Plattsmouth, Nebraska where we spent a lot of time visiting friends that were like family. Any book with the word ‘prairie’ or ‘plains’ in the title catches my eye. Sheer genius that move was! Although it might sell better if the publisher lowered the price to a reasonable level. He wrote about booze and broads and rambled on.īukowski brilliantly entitled the book, "Pulp." I say brilliant because, although he died in 1994, he had the foresight to know that there would be an internet and that there would be Amazon and that, if he entitled his final book "Pulp," it would always be at the top of the list whenever anyone searched for pulp or pulp fiction. ![]() So that kind of gives you the flavor of his writing. Another one of his books is entitled Notes of a Dirty Old Man. If Bukowski were alive today, I am sure he wouldn't have it any other way. His writing is either considered literary genius or drunken ramblings of a fool. Charles Bukowski is one of the those writers you either love or hate. ![]() ![]() ![]() Winkel's performance was subtle and effective. ![]() I found myself thinking "This does not bode well at ALL and I'm not sure I want to know where this will lead" at several points and yet, despite my anxiety, I found myself unable to tear myself away until I had swallowed every last bite. There is excellent use of atmosphere and ominous foreshadowing throughout. But they have an aspect of uncanniness too, which I believe serves the story. They are firmly rooted in reality, enough to empathize with their plight and to make you feel unsettled by the things they get themselves into. Do these feel like real people? Perhaps not, but that's ok! To me, they feel more like hyper-real, larger-than-life archetypes, condensed and concentrated versions of people you've probably encountered before (online or IRL). I thought the pacing was excellent, and the characters played well off of each other. It's an acquired taste, and not for the weak of stomach (fans of Takashi Miike's AUDITION will be familiar with the flavor profile), but for those who enjoy feeling a little nauseated after finishing a story, it's well worth a listen. is a succinct, bite-sized serving of psychological horror full of complex flavor and texture. ![]() ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Disabilities are naturally worked into the book's world through facial differences, body scars, a dwarf in a positive (if clichéd) role. Female stereotypes abound: They're homemakers, healers, dead mothers, a fortune-telling witch, or an unhappy wife who "wants the usual: a good home, happy children." Always a fond observer of the natural world, Eiseley makes a newly urgent, environmentalist plea in The Invisible Pyramid: we must protect the fragile “world island” against our unchecked power to pollute and consume it.
